Crickets and cicadas are especially prevalent this year

Two Tanka

From the dark pine trees

It seemed a thousand crickets

Hushed and fell as one

To the needled ground as though

Their wings were singed by moonlight

Still for thirteen years

They have composed in silence

What they chorus now -

This desperate seduction

Do they know it's their death song?

The first is about crickets, the second cicadas, though I can see why that would not be evident.

Thirteen-year cicadas, right? Calling them "crickets" is of course not accurate; but that matters to entomology, not to poetry! I like it a lot!

Both lovely, both in the true spirit of the seasons.
