In recognition of a tradition which occurs on December 21st, that far predates our Christmas celebration

Winter Solstice

Dark now
The winter sun has
Become slow to rise
In anticipation of tomorrow
Should it not return
The dark night will rule
Cold will grip the land
The hearth will blaze
With the Yule log
We will hold close this night
In feigned revelry
To ward against the creatures
of darkness
And pray the Sun
will once more rise
and begin its slow march
towards summer

A most enjoyable piece, my friend.
I know a little of the Winter Solstice and your poem brings out very well the elements of the tradition. The format's great too.
Applause!

I think it predates even humankind, and those "creatures of darkness" knew there was something special about the soltices and equinoxes. After all, we learned everything from Nature.
