Forest Shadows

We sifted amongst forest shadows,
In our acrylic ties, plastic shoes,
Minds cut off by stolid silhouettes.

Butterflies clung to dead, twisting twigs,
Somnolent as scattered light softened.
Cadaver beetle sank into earth,
Seeds of feathered champagne overhead.
Dignity peeled away, trees stood bare.
The mold-swathed underside of a rock-
Sanctuary to pill-bugs and worms.
Spider curled amid cactus spires,
So resigned to the gentle quiet.

Rightfully, we returned to Nature
As we perceived sadness in Beauty.
Lost in the gauze of thought, we listened
To the welkin creak with wild wind.
