Be warned this is a heavy and sad poem.

Wish I had seen the signs

You were in your prime
and having the time of your life
or so it seemed,
until THAT phone call.

Always I saw you with a smile
even when times were tough,
seemed always happy
it was like you couldn't live life enought.

I was happy to lend you money
whenever of it you were short,
I should of seen the signs
Maybe with eyes open you I could have caught.

The shock opened up my eyes
of a gambling problem that you tried so hard to hide,
that was the shocking truth
because your debt and depression was revealed by your sudden suicide.

I did not see the signs that you were in trouble
but I think why you suicided I understand,
I just wish I could have helped you
and I hope you're finally happy my best *man.

I had a very similar experience when I saw the signs and rationsalised them away...then this person took his life, so NEVER again will I ignore my little voice. Well done, Liz!

We all hide in our own shadows. Very few people see us in the daylight. So it is very hard to see the signs. You were always a friend and that means so very much. A very touching text.

That's tough. I had a good friend move to Florida where he got back into drugs and overdosed, he died just after my dad passed away from cancer. It is the frustration of being helpless at times to help those who need it to get past their addictions. By the time we can help it is too late. Sorry for your friend's passing.
