oasis

my words today
lay on the page
like limbs defeated
by inertia

concrete vines
sneaking within the
sounds of cuckoo birds,
heavy with
residual dignity
and auroral knowledge,
my words today
can't die

they'd crawl and
beg for shadow
and for mud and
for a tongue to cream
their meanings
but sunset ain't their time
and neither is sunrise

and so, trapped within
the betweenness of
seconds and thirds and
the rest of the world,
my words today
just claim the right
to haunt
