if you cared

if you cared about the way
a child breathes
in another place
far from you
where the poisoned water
flows
through centuries of human waste
you wouldn’t ask
why do they need to come here
you would open your door
knowing that it would be
a sacrifice
to your good fortune
for being born in a place
where the air is clean
and the water flows
from centuries of isolation

if you cared about anyone else
but yourself
and what you think
you are trying to protect
you would know this

but you don’t

I'm thinking of immigration laws and the tensions some people feel about receiving so many people from other places into their country... I guess not having been in a destitute, desperate position as some of these people are in when they make the decision to immigrate elsewhere, it can't be fully absorbed by those who have never been in that kind of position in their lives... it seems a bit cold to me that kind of attitude. Anyway, those are the thoughts that come to my mind when I read this. I found this truly good.
