(My new friend was a lovable dog I met at the coffee shop)

Making New Friends

Sometimes
a decision is made
to follow a path,
to turn a page
on our day,
when an unexpected greeting
occurs,
to let the light in.

A surprising gesture
of love,
of joy,
is given

and we walk away
with a heart uplifted,
with a smile shining
from our face,

and we are thankful
for that meeting
with a new friend.

Dogs and walkers and people who just love animals make friends - this is lovely - I ended up recently chatting with a lady and her dog - so nice, animals just cut through it and reach for what is real

My own dog is gone two years now, and when I still walk the paths we took and meet other dogs for a moment each one is mine again, a moment of love received and given, and a kind of innocence that happens only with a dog. I do "walk away
with a heart uplifted," as your poem does.
