The Mississquoi river runs through farm country cutting fertile bottom land as it carves its way from the high Vermont mountains to Lake Champlain.

Rhapsody on a Spring Afternoon

stark white stover and straw stubble
prick through oiled black soil
wetted by spring run off
farm fields in need of a spring shave
Barbasoled with remnants
of whipped cream drifts

Droplets from snow melt high above
merge in galactic hords to form
Mississquoi's laughing joyous frothing flow
cutting new banks on its run to
Champlain's quiet coves
where summer boys nod
over fishing poles in August's heat

I love this. I think its one of your best (out of many good ones). The imagery is fresh and effective. Happy spring!

Well done, Joe. There's an old fashioned, Robert Frostish or Carl Sandbergian tone to this poem. You pull it off nicely.

Idyllic, at least to someone like me.
"Barbasoled" is a wonderful metaphor . . . you and I remember the road signs . . . I wonder how many others do.

Very nice. I really like the last 2 lines. It finishes it really well.
