Sometimes I have odd thoughts while preparing dinner! :-))

Alas...Sadly... Cut Short

The butternut squash
Is parted dressed with
Honey ginger
Butter and care
Ready for the oven
When I think of its wild
Cousin that matures far from
Humanity's grasp
To live its life through
To satisfaction
And natural decay
releasing its next generation
While mine cultivated in
An industrial greenhouse
Life cut In its prime
Emasculated
To satisfy a momentary
Culinary whim

Well said, Joe. This would be "the circle of life" in our bizarre, mechanized world.

I think this habit of forcing fruit and vegetables is sad, I know it is commerical and people want things all year round but there is a reason for seasons and things do taste so much nicer when grown naturally with the correct elements - but enjoy your dinner as I enjoyed your poem

Yes, that is sad in a way. And the actual plant has probably been changed a lot by horticultural breeding and God know what else. Interesting to think about. Thank you :)
