Soldier

I heard the soldiers singing
Marching cheerfully to war
But could not think for all the world
What they were singing for

With all the colours flying
As they went their merry way
Saw a mother crying
Heard another pray

A thousand souls now sleeping
For every ravaged mile
I heard the Angels weeping
Saw the Devil smile

I heard the final gunshot
As War Drums ceased their beat
I drank a toast to victory

It tasted of defeat.

Brilliant from beginning to end. You managed to keep the same level of feeling through the whole thing. And a perfect ending. How sad war.

Well said. War only brings sorrow and defeat. A very passionate poem. My feelings about war exactly.
