Everybody has their own and unique opinion about dream. In my view, dream is a much more complex phenomenon than we think it is.

Dream

Actually we are awake while we dream and we can also say that we are always dreaming during wakefulness. Everything that is happening to us while we are awake may only be our dream. That sounds confusing, right? But it all depends on how we define this word "dream".

Dream is an image created by our brain. Because we are awake most of the times than we sleep in a day, our brain has a tendency to produce images, think over it and take decisions with the aid of our senses almost all the time. We can describe this using inertia, i.e. "whatever a body or object was going through, continues the same for some extended time even though it is interrupted". And the same happens with our brain. It will still be in a working state while we are asleep and as a result it keeps producing images as it was doing while we were awake.

The length of a dream can vary; they may last for a few seconds, or approximately 20–30 minutes. People are more likely to remember the dream if they are awakened during the REM phase. The average person has three to five dreams per night, and some may have up to seven; however, most dreams are immediately or quickly forgotten.

Dreams occur mostly in the rapid-eye movement (REM) stage of sleep in which the activity of brain is high and resemble that of being awake. In REM sleep our eyes moves continuously during sleep. However, dreams may also occur during other stages of sleep; these dreams are much less memorable. Dreams can have varying natures, such as being frightening, exciting, magical, melancholic, adventurous, or sexual. The events in dreams are generally outside the control of the dreamer, with the exception of lucid dreaming, where the dreamer is self-aware. Dreams can at times make a creative thought occur to the person or give a sense of inspiration.

We are dreaming all the time. The difference is just that during wakefulness our dreams are shaped by external information coming through our senses and while we are asleep it is not shaped by any external information rather it creates its own internal image out of all the memories that it holds in our subconscious mind. And that may be some supressed thoughts or events (past, recent, upcoming).

Dreams have some kind of motivated search in them. We usually find ourselves wandering around different landscapes looking for something that symbolizes the search for answers. Dream has led to some scientific inventions like sewing machine, periodic table of elements, some drugs and numerous nobles, movies and visual arts.Dream is much more complex than we think it is.
