WALKING THE KILLING FIELDS (WORLD WAR ONE TODAY)(ADDISHANS)

Today - the battlefields of a hundred years ago
are planted with crops - wheat - potatoes - sugar beet &CO
walk across the fields left fallow - resting - fore a year or so
look down at your feet - a you do - kick the soil - as you walk
you will find bullets some not spent - fired - bullets ,
be carfull - as you walk and kick the soil beneath your feet - fore no far down in the field lay shells - unfired - still a live - hand thrown bombed - still live - dangerous - even today - one hundred years since some do still contain explosive charges - many contain gas - mustard gas - should such a gas shell ,go off - and get that in your lungs - then - well - death - is nasty! Well you will drown! Should a light rain fall

should a go off shell gas go off - will fill ten tent - killing all with in - on your flesh - blisters - erupet - burn - nasty - I an sure you will agree
the farmers find UXBs , by the score! Lay then on the side - fore the army to pick up - and render them safe - or - explode them
the battlefields of WW1 , are still deadly to day - will be fore another hundred years!

The crop is not just bullets - shells - barbwire - the liter of war
nay - the fields of death - give up the dead - through out the year - finally given a burial - a headstone - with out their name - really - some are given back heir name
as you wake the battlefields - and kick the soil - you may kick an helmet - bend down
scrape away soil - pick up the helmet - inside you may find a scull - grinning up to you
you may find bits of men - a finger bone - a foot in a boot - remains of a soldier of misfortune - blown to bits by a shell - that did explode - parts scull - jaw bone - teeth - shin bones - ribs - remains - of direct hits - remains of what were liveing men - smashed - annihilated men
the battlefields of world one - have a story to tell

Not long ago in - 2001 - 24 - skeletons - were found - arms interlock - arm in arm
they were found
Only two were identified - given back their names. The other eight - lay with no name. Some say they were pals - joined up together - died with each other - at long last - giving a final burial - laid to rest.

Evocative enough. Well written. One of your best poems.

The horrors of the Great War still remains. And we can do nothing but lament about it retrospectively. So sad.
