HANDY HOOK! (World War One)
Company ''D'', took over the trench as per routine Battalion ordersThey took over from an company Jocks - at one AM - it were quiet
Ratal of a machine gun - indeavidal sounds of rifle fire - vary lights
Like stars in the night sky
The Jocks handing over as they hand over the trench say: '' Cushy hear ''
'' Fritz, nay a bother - most of the time '' ; When I ask what it were like!
'' That bad I say - '' ; Any soldier said it - were cushy - can mean it could get rather - shity!
'' There's a handy hook over there, you English bastard'' ; with out malice : Said the Jock - pointing to the side of the trench -; '' wee comfy 'ole, beside the hook - exsept when it rains - then - hope you've spare socks in your pack! '' ; said - Jock
As he pointed at front of the trench - '' to hang your webbing on, pal
'' Tommy went over to the handy hock , undid the straps of his gear
About to hang on the hook - when he saw it were a skeletal leg
''Don't worry about him - he's armless , '' laughing - Jock said, knowing the inevitable reaction!
''Recon he's been there since 14 - when they dug this trench '' ; ''He got killed, they Were in a bleeding hurry - made 'im a part of the trench! '' ; '' bleeding Frogs! ''
'' Aye he were French - going on his trousers! ''
They shook hands wished each other luck - and the war went on!
