John Clare
Madman and poet,
I've just come to understand,
And it gives me no pleasure—
I see the world through your eyes.
You revel in detail,
Yet leave conclusions to be drawn,
As they will be,
By those who wish to speculate
On cause and effect.
It is enough to see the particulars,
To record them as events,
As pleasures, to reveal to others
What they have not the patience
To see for themselves.
Admirable poet, you frighten me
With your madness and familiarity.
