THE GOOD SOLDIER TOM WHO DID NOT PRAY (World War One - Any War)
Soldier Tom, avoided all things religious
Never found praying
Till an officer asked Just had to ask: '' Tell me soldier Tom ''
'' How is it you wangle out of church parades? ''
'' You volunteer to dig out a latrine in preference?'' ; '' Why? ''
'' Well Sir, it's like this'' ; '' Now THERE maybe a God ''
'' Or maybe not ''
'' Each to their own I say - who what ever 'elps 'em, sir ''
'' I'm not proper educaited - like you is sir '' ; ''I cant say one way or the other ''
'' Well, sir, it's like this, sir ''
''Since I've been out hear ''
''I seen more blokes die, more than I can say ''
'' Killed more than my share of Germans - them prayed an nal, I recon, Sir ''
'' Them trying to kill me - I killed - them before they could kill me, sir ''
'' All of me pals died out hear that I joined up with ''
'' Most believed in God I have to admit that ''
'' Now sir - they prayed to God - they died anyway ''
'' Now Sir - I do not pray - to any God ''
'' And sir - well I'm still hear - a live! ''
'' Now how can I pray to survive - while -
Others who prayed to live - they dead all the same, sir! ''
'' Now sir I dont know about any God '' ; '' I aint putting me self first to live
By praying fer me self, sir! ''
'' Na, I will carry on 'as I am, thanks all the same, sir! ''
The officer what could he say or do, just nodded and said ;
'' Carey on soldier Tom ''
Foot note: Old Soldier Tom died at age 118 he made it to die at a ripe old age. Millans did not live to die in bed, of old age.
