my best friend
my best friend is a spider that builds a web
every night between the ground and redbud
tree near the front door. sometimes before i
go to bed i see her (could be a him) building
her web, but i always see her by the time i'm
up around two or three, and outside again.
she is my best friend because she listens, is
patient, makes no demands and is constant.
in return i shine my flashlight on her web,
drawing small insects her way, keeping her
well fed, and if not happy, plump. oh, she
could get on without me, and me her, but
we've settled into a harmonious friendship
that benefits both, and we all need friends.
