Nearly is Good Enough
Yesterday, a crescent moon and Joe Wilder
Some might say a perfect day
Lou Reed, for example
Superficially, it was
The concerns of a parent obviate perfection
Still, there is no denying the moon and Joe Wilder
At bedtime, an email from a friend
Causing me to chuckle, and maybe a little more
It was good day
I'll say—a nearly perfect day
~
In reflection, now, the mirror says something else
Be reflective, it says, of your experiece
It is fine to give thanks, to tally accounts
Keep going, complete the picture as best you can
~
As best I can recall, it started in 1953
Perhaps that is going back too far
It may have started in second grade, the first experience
Of stepping out of myself
It could be any number of conversations and phone calls
In which bad news was conveyed
Bad news in the past causing thankfulness in the present, now
Some of each, the curse of self-awareness
Coupled with reality
