The Ashley Book of Knots

i think i could be happy

were i on a desert isle with just this book

and a length or two of rope

i would begin on page 330

then turn to 17

and then, perhaps, to 474, why not

every page holds joy—there

for the taking

irresistible, urging—one more, one more

you can do this   and   who knows

you may need this one

and i have, time and again, needed this one

oh, this is a fine book, and one lifetime

is not enough to master it

Poems are for me what knots are for you. This is a good one.

Ashley has been a textbook on my navigation table and on my desk at home for decades. You’re absolutely right. I couldn’t find a better way to pass time than with two pieces of rope and Ashley’s.
