for Elle, and her strong sense of place
Some of the things I saw this morning on my walk
(I live in Missouri, in the Ozarks)
Some of the Things I Saw
Georgette, the aquatic turtle that lives in our pond
Two box turtles, both male, gray squirrels and fox squirrels
Millicent and Edmund, eagles nesting (it takes two), chicks yet to hatch
Creeks, springs, timber, bottomland, rocky hillsides, grassy glade
Ash, oak, sycamore, hickory, cherry, dogwood, redbud, hawthorn, and more
Fallen trees rotting, evidence of trees I've cut for firewood
Wild mustard, grape vine, spring beauties, may apples, rue
Too many wildflowers and plants to name
Naming isn't important
Evidence of armadillos (burrows, lots of them), turkey, coyotes
Many deer, acorns, old barb-wire, rock piles from cleared fields
Bones of deer scattered here and there
Blue sky, white clouds, gnats, hawk, jays, pileated, flickers, and many more
Our house from a distance, our house from close proximity
