finding west
i walk to the top of the lane, blue sky coloring
as the sun sets, i make two marks—one near, one far
so i will know true west as it is the equinox
at the moment the moon is directly south
a half moon cut sharply, its uncurving edge
pointing precisely earthward bisecting my country road
between the moon and sunset and time of year
it is a convergence of celestial mechanics
it doesn't matter where west is in my day-to-day
and a southern half-moon comes monthly
and blue skies are omnipresent, if sometimes veiled
but altogether it is worth noting, and i do note
sky, moon, setting sun, country road, man
earth's rotation, time passing—kind of elemental
9/23/15 autumn equinox
