NETTA SYRETT - A WRITER BORN IN RAMSGATE (1865 - 1943)

Netta Syrett a feisty lady - a woman protagonist - a woman of attitude that is!
A writer of the late Victorian period
A great writer of note
Born in Ramsgate Kent
Netta's home town - my home town
Her father believed his children should be educated
He were the father of seven siblings
Her sisters were Nellie - Kate - & Mabel -were artists in their own right
Designers - illustrators

All educated by their mother & a German governess

Enspite of her father giving Netta and her sisters
A good education - Netter - did not get on with her father
Could of been due to Netters sexuality - sad but true - I think

Netta took her opportunity's that came her way
Such as writing short storys having them published

Father sent her to London when Netta were eleven to carry on her & her sisters
Education at Collegiate School London
Then too a Cambridge a woman's college
Netta wrote short story's while she were a teacher
In her spare time

A mother took umbrage - after reading review of a story Netta had had published
The Daily Telegraph reviewed - the paper said the story was thinly disguised story Of Netta (Syrett) her self!
The mother put pen to paper complaining about Netta Syrett story!
Complaining that such THAT woman was teacha!
The mother would not stand for Such a Woman teaching her child - her Daughter!
Netta promptly resigned her position! Netta given no choice in the mater!

Netta were not defeated! - Far from that!
Netta, believed in her rights - woman's rights!
The right to vote not least of all!

That all woman had rights - should have equal rights with men!

Netta being a writer of the late Victorian eara
Was very aware of what Oscar Wild were going through
Oscar (Wild) being sent to Reading jail - found guilty of being homosexual - bi - Gay

Netta (Syrett), Know that the establishment - would soon be after her!
Netta lead others to campaign - in her writings - for her rights to be a lesbian
Along with men equal rights with in their sexuality!

The only reason lesbians never suffered as homosexuals had & have until the 1960's

Was kind of simple - no one had the courage to explain to Queen Victoria
How woman - could well have sex with each other!

Netta write 30 novels older children's & adults
Her most significant book in this writers opinion is Nettas novel
Portrait Of A Rebel - that were adapted for the film - A Woman Rebels
Staring - Katharine Hepburn - released 1936

I found that film by chance - thats how I found Netta Syrett
A woman of words - a woman of significance!

Netta Syrett - is better known in America

Than she is known in her home Town & Country

A Prophet In Her Own Land - Receives None - At Best Very Little Recognition
Springs To Mind!

Many American students gained their MAs & Doctorates due to Netta (Syrett)

Very few British students have heard of our Netta Syrett
Till I the writer informs them of Netta Syrett!

Nettas Syrett Only book available is her republished book in the U . K is:
Magic London - a kind SIFI - fantasy - teenage girls she wrote for.
