A BABUSHKA

A an elderly Babushka*

Walks forward on unsteady legs

But with a firmnes look all the same

Towards a heverly armnde Russtian soldger

Held his gaze - never blinking

She hands him a sead
' Whats this, Babushka? ' says the bemoused Russtian soldger

' Why it is a sunflower sead, young man '

' Put it in your pocket ' ; ' So it will grow and become a giant Sunflower '

' Show whear you are buryed! '

Babushka is the only Russian word I remember from my youth. My then best friend was learning Russian, and just like the then broadcast 'Good Show' had this expression of 'Rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb!', we had "Babushka, babushka, babushka!" Your poem brought all that back to me (and his untimely departure)... and at the same time was like a parable. Well done, Ken.
