THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR - THE LAST ROMANTIC WAR?

Poets and writers went off to Spain

Took pencils and notebooks with them

To write of what they saw

And of what they did there
Harts and minds committed

To the cause - defending
The democratically elected government
Against Nationalists - Fascists led by Franco

With the support of Hitler and Mussolini

The democracies of the world at best lukewarm
In support of the democratically elected government of Spain

It may be said, some were hoping for a victory for Franco and his Nationalists!

They lived to regret what they did and did not do!

To quote FDR ' Maybe we should have supported the Spanish government '

There were those who believed

THE TIME WAS NOW TO STAND UP - BE COUNTED

There were people from all the strata of nations who made their own way
To  Spain, formed The International Brigade, only a few did know how to hold A Rifle! Hemingway had to show them how!

The German and the Italian volunteers were focused and disciplined, for they know just what Fascism were about!

There were poets and writers, who went to Spain, naive, innocents, romantics

Abroad!

Maybe the Shelleys along with Byron, would of volunteered to fight for Spain!

Thousands were to die in Spain for what they believed in!

Pencils worn into stubs, notebooks, replaced by scraps of paper now

I enjoyed reading this Ken. My only quibble is that the Spanish Civil War, was more complicated - not black and white, though I for one would have fought for the Republican side. Re poets, Roy Campbell fought for Franco, and was able to serve in WWII, while some of those who fought for the republic were not able to serve.
Funny old world!
