A Gang of Mixed-Race People
Actually, I wasn’t experiencing racism, I was imagining things! I had an imagination problem… it’s easier to fix an imagination problem than to change reality… that’s why I became an artist. All of that was in my head, my worst enemy. So when I talked about it to my father or my stepfather, they didn’t want to address the subject because it didn’t affect them—racism meant nothing to them. Sometimes my stepfather would talk to me about the Germans who had invaded Belgium, almost as if they had been racialized too… I didn’t have any brothers to share these unpleasant experiences with… and the psychiatrists never wanted to address the issue of racism until it had become a disease of my imagination…Poetry by Albert Vynckier
