Cowley & Cathedral

This cosy, carpeted Episcopal bookstore

on Temple Place in Downtown Crossing, Boston

was one of my safe places in the late 1990s
when I was a brittle rightwing Catholic outlier
whose heart of hearts craved tenderness and peace.
Priscilla, Todd, and Helen behind the counter.
CDs of chant from the monkhouse at 980 Memorial,
icons and books and all kinds of churchy journals ---
a sweet and reasonable place when I was not those things!

too much religion might drive me a bit eccentric but too many religions when they don't permit mixed marriages might be a trouble in the Natural life of men for the time being, every shepherd like to count their pious believers
