First I didn’t think this was a poem and then I didn’t think it was complete, but something compelled me to read it at a poetry event yesterday and that went well. So here you go!


I will be your witness

When you live alone
you don’t get to tell anyone
about your day

I’d like to tell someone
that my yoga mat
fell out of the auto today

That the package from Clove Dental
arrived on the same day
I ran out of toothpaste

And that the space bar
on my laptop
stopped working

But these are not things
you call a friend to tell

They’re not worthy

Yet I know that if I had someone
I’d tell them,
I’d tell them every nothing
and I’d want to hear their nothings too.

This reminds me
of what Susan Sarandon said in a movie
when asked why she wants to get married

She said, ‘Your life will not go unwitnessed
because I will be your witness’

And perhaps that’s why
it’s fun to talk to a stranger.
They’re witnessing your life,
even if just for a moment.
