Or the price of being right!

Not a poem just some words of observation. Basically i get so tired of some of the diatribes i read on the web. That i thought i would write a retort i could post when suitably riled.

The right price

The danger comes
when we pay too much homage
to the sound of our own voice.

Yes! We are entitled to our beliefs
but don't let them drive the lips too fast
basking in the righteousness of our own sun
does a disservice to the wondrous design of nature
and is analogous to checking the pan
for the size of one's own excrement.

Remember an opinion is a slippery customer
which can adopt many shapes and forms
walk through many doors and present many disguises
the pictures painted will never be conclusive
because nobody is blessed with the knowledge
of a complete pallet of colours.

Concede that the kernel of truth is tasteless
unless garnished with humility and understanding
better to let the tongue burn
in the hot air of its own ego
than to let the oily slick of its opinions
pollute the day.

Then maybe the sound of harmony
will once again engage and enthral
the innocence of the child's mind.

Well that's my opinion :-)

Kat
well, you have a way of capturing the essence of the poem or thought so completely and then expressing it beautifully.

I wish I had written this. Eloquently straight in your face, reasonable observations on a common human blip of the mind which renders sense and consideration for others non-existent when self-righteousness + the love of one's own voice take up too much space - aside the need of being right!

I'd quote my favorite lines but if I did, every verse of your poem would end up in my comment here ;) But, I must say, what an excellent use of the alphabet, and your line breaks are stunningly memorable :D xx

Peter J. Kautsky
slapped me into humility here -- powerful poetic expression.

A beautiful poem in my humble opinion Rik and so true, the net is full of walruss's flapping their fat, flat lipped opinions with no regard for the sensitivities of the human heart. Wreaking havoc in others lives seems to be their order of the day. I loved every word of your response, especially these lines

Concede that the kernel of truth is tasteless
unless garnished with humility and understanding

thank you for doing just that for us here....

Have a great weekend,

Tai

Well written Rik. I especially liked '...an opinion is a slippery customer.' and also, 'better to let the tongue burn/in the hot air of its own ego.'

True that. I love some of the lines in this.

Written beautifully enough to be called poetry. Amazing work. I especially love the pallet metaphor. Great Work.

Zoya Zaidi
So, true!
Some people really are so self righteous, quick to advise others and never look at them self with a self-critical eye or notice their own faults...
(((Hugs for the reflective text)))
