I am not quite this cynical in real life.
infinite, perhaps,
about waking up to a
glittering, silent "good morning"
to soft white frosting on every treebranch
but nowadays it only means
that school will be delayed two hours
and I can get more sleep
which makes me wonder...
How ethical is this business
of locking up young people for six hours a day
five days a week
with few or no outlets for their blossoming creativity,
interests, sexuality, ideas
with few real choices
and rigidly enforced direction
clashing and crashing together...
Can we really condemn the violence
that sometimes breaks out in such crowded halls,
when really we have brought it all upon ourselves?
How could we adapt this system to make it more---
I don't know---
humane?
The next time you look into the eyes
of a sullen-faced teenager,
instead of judging her sour expression,
consider why she might appear so...exanimate.
Pity her, even, if you dare to,
because chances are she goes through as much pain,
stress, pressure, heartbreak
as you do, perhaps more---
and with far less sympathy and understanding from the world.
Don't judge her if on days
when you're overjoyed with nature's beauty,
she's merely thankful for a few hours' rest.
