My first sestina and the first creative piece I've written in a long time...sorry if it's a bit rusty.

Rebirth

When the time came to be reborn,
She carefully folded her white
Arms across her chest, tried to breathe
In slowly, attempting to calm
The troubled pounding of her heart
And the voice deep within her skull

There was always a blackness in her skull
A cloud that kept her from being reborn
Before the demons deserted her heart
Back in the dark days when tears streaked her white
Face and no matter how she tried to calm
Down, it never seemed safe enough to breathe

Now that she had the time to breathe
She thought of a glittering skull
Leering at her delicate calm
Insisting she could never be reborn
Never be as pure and as white
As the future she held in her heart

She heard the words and she thought her heart
Might break; she tried once more to breathe
But nothing felt pure anymore; nothing's white
She heard the words in her head, skull to skull
And she thought she could never be reborn
She closed her eyes instead and sought calm

Someone had told her once about the calm
Before the storm, but her weary heart
Had forgotten what it meant to be reborn
For now, she told herself, I will just breathe
She pushed away the voices and the skull
Trying to make the blackness fade to white

Somewhere in the past she had seen the bleached white
Skeleton of a whale spread upon the darkness of calm
Midnight sand, and she remembered a skull
Longer than herself, and wondered if its heart
Had been just as large, and if it could breathe
Like her, and if somewhere, it too had been reborn

Then fireworks burst in her skull, and she knew at last her white
Soul inside was about to be reborn, regenerating her heart
She smiled, remained calm, even when she could no longer breathe
