A New Teachers Ode
Back in the classroom after so many years
Different this time, no pressure from peers
I wonder what sort of teacher I'll be
Am I old and daggy? Will they like me?
I've written an introductory note
I can't believe the things I wrote
Hi I'm Miss Bla, and this and that
How can I tell them where I'm at?
In truth, I'd rather say......
I want to teach your child to sing
But songs aren't the most important thing
I want to show them how to feel
The beauty of a tune that's real
To sing because it makes you glad
To stand up tall and not feel bad
To bring out all they have inside
Not feel as if they have to hide
Confidence came late for me
No tutors to help set me free
The crowds, they couldn't understand
They just paid to come and see a band
I'll give them theory, set a test
But it takes more than notes to be your best
With encouragement, a child is seeded
I strive to be the teacher that I needed
Overwhelmed with responsibility
As you trust your precious child to me
I can give them my years, all I know
And nurture their own inner glow
An one more thing before we start
To listen not just with ears, but also heart
And the most important lesson of all,
To just have fun, we're gonna have a ball!
