When was the last time you went in to that abandoned vacant house ..... the ones that the kids on the block managed to pry open and run from room to room ..... Next time sit in one of her rooms and just listen to what she is waiting to reveal..... we nee

Abandoned House

© Tom Farrell 2007

When the children come by (which isn't often on this road....)
They like to run through rooms and up those stairs
Mostly to hear the sounds of feet echoing in rooms too bare
To muffle the sound of their scampering shoes...

Every now and then
People with Christmas cameras;
Or Students writing reports on the economics
Of this part of the State; or older folk
With newly- discovered hobbies that come
with straps and bags and digital delights....
Every now and then they stop by
Sometimes with cars still running
To snap photos of this abandoned house.

It saddens me
That only the children paused to hear
The sounds the house will share ...
And even then
No one listens to the stories
The house is waiting to reveal.

Kathy Lockhart
you have created some vivid imagery which has taken me to the doorway of this house. I feel the emotions and hear the whispers of those who have passed through before me. : ) kathy
