Please look fore the news story on the BBC news site , thank you. I read the story , and felt it would make a good poem. This one story of one man , there were more who did similar as Denis ( Avey ) I regret this by me is as so good , as it should be. I
He were a soldier ,
In world war two ,
Captured ,
Put in to P O W camp ,
Near to Auschwitz ,
He decided to smuggle ,
Him self in to Auschwitz ,
To see fore him self ,
What the war was all about ,
He did so more than once ,
I quote:
'' When you think about it'' ,
'' In today's environment'' ,
'' Absolutely ludicrous'' ,
'' You wouldn't , think anyone '' ,
'' Would think or do that''
'' But , that's how I was back then ''
'' I had red hair , a temperament to match'' ,
'' Nothing , no one would stop me '' ,
Denis , arranged to swap one night at a time ,
With a Jewish inmate , he'd come to trust ,
Who had come to trust , Denis , in return ,
He dresst in the uniform of Auschwitz ,
The Jew , in Denis army uniform ,
Fore the inmate , it meant rest , food ,
Life , fore one more night ,
Fore , Denis , danger of sudden death ,
And worse ,
Denis , now drest as prisoner of Auschwitz,
The uniform stank of death , dirtied by who knows what ,
Denis , saw fore him self the evil of mankind ,
He were a witness to it all ,
All night he'd listened too the sobbing , the screams ,
The terrible stench of death and shit , that prevailed ,
He talked to the now fellow prisoners ,
Rarely of what they were before Auschwitz ,
They talked of the punishments , the work ,
They were made to do ,
Five months was at most they expected to live ,
Then '' up the chimney'' ,
Prisoners , people shot daily , brutality , the norm ,
Denis , was determined to help as best he could ,
He met a prisoner by the name of Ernst Lobethall ,
Who told , Denis , of his sister , Susana ,
Who'd escaped to the U K , on the eve of the war ,
Denis , through a coded letter to his mouther ,
Made contact with Susana , from his P O W camp ,
Now cigarettes , chocolate , meant life ,
Gold worth not a thing ,
With cigarettes , Ernst , were able to have his ,
Shoes shod , cost to packs of Player's ,
So insuring Ernst , were able to survive the death march ,
Denis , met , Susana , briefly , in 1945 ,
At the time both thought Ernst , had died in the camp ,
But , Ernst had savvied!
Ernst , had gone to the U S A ,
The B B C , had found her , then they found , Ernst!
He had children , lived a long and happy life ,
Denis exclaimed: '' BLOODY MARVELLOUS'' ,
Sadly , Ernst , died never knowing the reil name of ,
The British soldier , who became his friend ,
And helped save his life ,
Before he died , Ernst , later Ernie ,
Made a video fore the Shoah Foundation ,
In which , Ernie , told of his English friend ,
A British soldier , he's met in Auschwitz , he only kowe ,
As ginger ,
That soldier was Denis!
A man above men , is Denis.
Dedicated to Arthur Dodds , Charley Cowered , Denis Avey ,Charley Evens and all those forgotten men , who are not forgotten. Who refused to give way to all to human response '' well fore me the war's over'' who went in to Auschwitz. Did their bit . Witness's to a humankind created hell. Please goggle these men , find out more. Put the BBC in your request , also , goggle British solders in Auschwitz. I found an intresting resant discovery made in the camp , that raises some questions.
