From an experience that my father shared with me .
Dad were one happy , Joly jack tar ,
The war were over , he'd survived ,
He bordered the ship , H M S Challenger ,
Set off fore home , ailing back to dear old blighty ,
In mid ocean , a mine were spotted ,
Bobbing up and down , in the swell of the sea ,
Matlows and marines , were summoned arft ,
Issued rifles , ordered too shoot at the bobbing mine ,
After abut an half an hour , it blew ,
Then the ships crew harvesting the fish ,
'' Fish and chips tonight lads!'' , was the cry,
From all the crew on board ,
Dad , arrived home to his home port of Chatham ,
Where he was given home leave , a travail warrant , to
Tyidesley , Lancashire , his home town ,
Where his family waited , to welcome there son home from the war ,
He were greeted , hugs and cuddles from his mom ,
His dad welcome him home , his son gave him backer for his pipe ,
Gifts , knick - knacks to his mom , that her son has brought back from over seas,
Tiredness took over dad , he fell asleep on the sofa ,
The fears he'd had through out the war came in to his dreams ,
The mine , he'd in-counted , came to him , as he slept ,
He cried out as he slept , '' DON'T THE FOOKERS KNOW IT'S OVER ?'',
he swore out loud ,
'' THE BASTARDS , THE FOOKING BASTARDS '',
His mom , was most shocked , her David , swearing like that ,
His da , a savvier of the bloody battlers of ww1 , understood ,
For the first time since his son came in to the world ,
''Nay , lass leave him be'' ,
Held his son in his arms , he understood all so well
