OFF TO THE CIRCUS

To the circus me and the boys decided to go ,

We saw lions raw as the whip cracked at the ,

At the speed of sound ,

Saw the boxing kangaroo ,

Watched the elephants trunk to tail ,

Standing on box's , turning circles ,

Clowns , clowning about , throwing water over each other ,

Lady and man flying on the trapeze ,

Then the prancing horses ,

Best of all the bear back rider , perfect balance ,

Around and around the horse and lady went ,

Then the ring master in to center stood ,

With the spotlight on him , he called for volunteers ,

To ride the horse bareback ,

The horse went around and around ,

The ringmaster , called for a volunteer to ride the horse ,

Bear back!

If the volunteer made it round , then he or she would win ,

A pound!

We kids said '' I'll have a go at that! '' , '' a hole quid! '' ,

'' We'll have some of that '' ,

You should of seen us , as we stormed the circle ,

Elbowing each other out the way , no quarter given ,

Every kid fore himself ,

I WON!

I stood in front of the ringmaster , he said

'' looks like you then bonny lad '',

The strapped me in to an harness ,

The horse went around and around ,

I had three attempts , to jump on the horse ,

Third time I were on her back , belly on it's back ,

Looking at sawdust covered ring ,

I struggled till I faced the horses head and not it's tail ,

Then I like a cat stood , upon my hands and knees mange to get ,

I pushed up on me hands , till I were standing on my feet ,

I was goner win , I were goner make it round the circle!

Fat chance!

They pulled me off the horses back ,

UP UP I went , I decided to act it up a bit ,

I as if I were swimming in midair ,

Needles to say I was not given the pound!

Yes I was robed!"

Soup in the Sand
Very groovy write, so much life to it!! That line, "I've been robbed" that is so very redolent of Sir, how he can oh so relate to this. A spirited and vividly-hued write!! Just love it!!

I don't know, Ken. An experience like that has to be worth at least a pound.

Great story Ken, no wonder it is a memory you'll never forget. Circuses are strange things - people either love them or hate them. I've always thought them very sad for some reason, I think it's the animals who seem sad to me, not only having been taken from their natural homes but being forced to perform the same 'tricks' day after day, going in endless circles like the horse . . . and I know many people who are afraid of clowns. I'm glad your memory is a good one.

What fun, my friend!
I enjoyed this memory when you first recalled it to me, and I am delighted to see it promoted. It has been a while since I visited the circus, so a very welcome opportunity to take time out from tedious tasks and appreciate these entertaining scenes. And so well told! A true delight.
Applause!
