I Heard My Muse Singing
I Heard My Muse SingingWhen I woke this morning
I woke alone,
and yet my thoughts were kind.
I heard my muse singing
a cheerful tune
while you danced through my mind.
You danced with clever tread
—deft and nimble—
attired in lily-white.
A garland girt your head;
brisk and agile
you danced to my delight.
You spun so skillfully
I was entranced
by your animation,
and spontaneity.
Laughing, you danced
with imagination.
Suddenly you faded
—in a vapor—
before my captive gaze;
then you dissipated
into ether . . .
Sadden the song gay muse.
