What Do You See?

What Do You See?

What the...? Look at what time did to me...
my once-firm physique and handsome face
exist only in photography,
leaving flab and wrinkles in their place.
Yet (despite a partial loss of sight,
hair, teeth, and strength; muscle and joint pain
throughout my frame—often day and night—
and a smaller, ever-shrinking brain)
I'm the same person I was before
I aged (well, perhaps a tad wiser)—
except I tend to reminisce more,
although it's harder to remember.
What do you see when you look at me,
an attractive and potential mate
or an old goat who is rapidly
approaching his expiration date?

It's hard to find a good poem about aging these days, but this one is refreshingly frank and, as Elle noted, humorous and witty. Too bad we don't live in an era when getting older was considered an asset and older people were respected and looked up to. I do believe that I'm older but wiser, but body and mind seem to beg to differ.

This did make me smile, especially as I got towards to the end, where I burst out laughing.

It is good to retain a sense of humour about ourselves and the aging process, which can be irksome at times - along with aches - I seem to find a new one every day!
