Now There is a Word

What is said in the brave traditions of parliament only sways the moment and helps others forget that development is always a two edge sword. There may be window-dressing government support to the village three days from the nearest track but the price may be the rape of the ancient hidden mountain to leave poison in the rivers in order to feed the chatting masses in the coffee bars.

Order, Order!
Right Honourable Secretary for Overseas Development.....
We are committed as a caring government
To play a substantial role in the alleviation
Of poverty and long term creation
Of sustainable opportunity
For eliminating poverty
We are the vanguard of relief
The epitome of belief

Ah development, there's a word
Heavy like a mountain and absurd
Just what is the development meant to do
What does the concept mean to you
Developing my freedom from the war
Developing the guns to kill some more
It's a complicated word to say
Just a promise that never goes away

And alleviation is just another breath
It never stops the terrifying death
From last year's failing rain
To this year's drying pain
It doesn't soothe the baby's scream
In the empty night of shattered dream
But maybe it relieves your guilt
For the stealing empire that you built

Opportunity is your facile hope
Your lifeline made of fraying rope
What you give you snatch away
To match the politics that sway
In the wind of your distorted speech
That keeps all reason out of reach
You have no opportunity for me
For I am not who you would want to be

Sustainable means to last forever
By the hand of my endeavor
Giving seeds to grow tomorrow
To feed the future free of sorrow
It also means you will forget
To walk away with no regret
To boldly crow your work is done
Your brave new dawn has just begun

Man is the only creature that measures his progress by what he destroys . . . eventually, perhaps inevitably, ourselves.

jenks The PoetBay support member heart!
Thank you for this.
Bliss to read.
You have gathered points and knitted them together in the humane way that is needed.
And you sound so well in an ear :)
If I had a cap I would doff it.
