Distant mountains covered in snow with a frozen lake beneath. The shadows are low across the landscape picking up every detail and exaggerating the shapes.

Laying Out Shadows

The sun sculpts shapes of shadow
Some show the depth of hillside
Others, the expanse of place
Some are sent by wind blow
To where the secret stories hide
From the early winter sun glow

Some are straight with detail
That outline the flat of lake
Or round the pebble beach
Others in the wind gale
Dimple drift and try to make
A picture just beyond our reach

Shadows turn with changing hour
They point in other ways
Directing new ideas
That add colour as they scour
The price that coldness pays
To live this time of year
