Go ask Alice.

Mentioning The Sea

'I shall never mention The Sea to you again,' he said.
He makes such promises impossible to fulfill.

'Where are the linen napkins embroidered with figures
Of Napoleon and Josephine?
Distinguished guests should be arriving for dinner soon.
The polished silver looks like a mirror waving back
as one passes by.'

(He forgets each evening whatever reality says
and thoughts tend to stray afar from beaten trails.)

'I'll wager the Sun's made of golden pies
stacked inside one another until quite thick.
See all the filling escapes like light
To dance across The Sea of Night.

My word, I've mentioned The Sea!'
