Very much a work in progress. Needs a lot of work on it. Ideas , coming in to my mind.
Qude up out side village halls , town and city recroutmant offices
To join the army to fight for God , King and Empire eager to take
Take the Kings shilling ( A DAYS PAY! ), to go off to war
They were in a hurry , '' hurried up '' , by the recruiting sargants
Those who were not in a hurry , were presented with white feathers
And called cowherds , reluctantly , volunteered , and duly died
There mothers resevde each a dead mans penny '' he died a hero ''
Some mothers resevde seven dead mans penny's , a plaque ,
Wife's of course resevde one to , some resevde two , husband and sons had died a
Heroes death!
'' Thats nice , of the King , to think of our , my , our Alfy '' , I reckon not!
Also resevde the bills fore the blankets their loved ones had been buried in
'' The War will be over by Christmas '' '' HURRY HURRY ''
Rang out up and down , north , to the south east and west of the land
All over great Britain , all parts of The Empire the call was heard
'' Your King and empire is under threat '' '' them Huns ''
'' Will do all kinds of nasty things to your mum and sister to ''
'' Just ask the plucky Belgium's , they're tell you true , of what them Huns will do ''
At the battle of Loos , 15,000 solderers were killed , not one German soldier died
The B . E . F , British finest , ceased to exist as a fighting army
Fifteen thousand men lay dead in no mans land , or lay on the '' old barbwire ''
Shot to hell , rotted , flesh rotted fore those who did not die that day to witness
Flesh , slowly rotting , dispersing , bones , bleached white , weathered , to 1918
Sculls , in death , grinning , at the '' joke of death or glory '' '' all we got was
Death! '' '' hear our silent screams! '' our warnings we give from the hell that is
war '' , '' NO ONE LISTENS! '' , '' TIME AFTER TIME AGAIN AND AGAIN AND
AGAIN! '' WARS ARE MADE , MILLIONS PERISH '' , ''will wars ever end? ''
Those boys , hard to call them men , pore sods , had no idea of what was to
Come there way , when some would envy those who died
The were to form the New Army , to become men the hard way , kill or be killed
The first of the volunteers , were to land on the beech's of Gallipoli
The Dardanelles , The Bloody Dardanelles , thousands to die
Fore God , King and the Empire!
Kitchener's army as the new army's were called back then in 1915
Joined up with what was left of the prewar British Army , recalled from parts
Of the empire , the biggest empire ever known in history
Joined Australians and New Zealand's , Indians troops , and Irish , who were
Members of the great British empire way back , then , a 100 years ago
French soldiers were a part of that misadventure of war , a disaster
A Churchill folly , my grandfather , Jo Williams , was never to forget or forgive
He was , lucky , he stopped a bullet , so savived , to take part in the battle of
The Somme , but thats another story , bye the bye
Kitchener's army , bleed along side of the British army
