Reunion Time

A Gathering of friends and classmates
Reminders of times pleasant and strained
Together discussing the past
Defining times both real and unreal

Times change, people age
Internal confusion reigns
People the same yet different
Our lives paths begin to unfold
Apprehension, unease, joy all rolled up inside
Relaxed nothing left to hide.

We came, we survived, we listened
Those important come and go
Relaxed at last reflections of good times shared
Amid strains of music from dances long ago

The eyes close, time retreats
Our youth lost but relived, tears flow
A small smile, memories flooding
Young loves won and lost
Victories and pain merge blurring our past

Reality pushes the fantasy aside
Memories of the past subside
The euphoria regained abates
The event the gathering slows
Just another memory stored
Awaiting a new awakening.

If I've read this correctly, it explains why I went to my twentieth high school reunion, hated it, and didn't go to my fortieth.
