A story/poem. A work in progress.

MARY MANNING , KAREN GEARON AND NELSON MANDELA

Mary and Karen , many will not know of them , or of there mates

Of Dublin

They worked for Dunnes Stores Henry Street City of Dublin

Mary work the tills , Karen her shop steward , union rep , that is

Mary and Karen , Union , had decided to oppose apartheid in South Africa

In 1970 , the Springboks rugby team were due to play against the Irish team

Mary and Karen , took action , Mary refused to check out Outspan grapefruits

For a customer

Mary said to the customer and her boss '' she would not sell any South African

Fruit that day or any day! ''

That day Mary and Karen , lead there mates out of Dunnes store

On strike for two years six months so they were

Striking in support of those they never know , or ever met , I'm thinking

Solid in solidarity they stuck

Now Mary , Karen and there mates , did not have to do what they did

They could of said '' We're Irish '' '' whats a going on in South Africa ''

'' Nothing to do with us , or Ireland! '' '' south or north! ''

'' That polities , that is! '' , '' Nothing to bother our heads with!

'' Wear going out with the boys tonight , new band playing at Paddy's Bar ''

'' There grand so we've been told! ''

'' Whats Apartheid about? '' , '' well we're Irish! '' , '' so nothing to do with us ''

Well , Mary and Karon , made it were there concern , something to do with with

THEM!

Tis a shame , they will not be invited to say farewell to Nelson Mandela

The great and the good , politicians and celebs will gather of course

I wonder what Mary and Karen will be doing next Sunday?

It were the likes of Mary and Karen and her mates who helped destroy , tear down

Apartheid

This is fascinating Ken, and so true. A just cause can begin or take its voice from one who becomes its face, but it endures by the courage of many who are little known but become its soul.
