A WORK PROGRESSES"!
We were waiting for our chum , Archy
Archy was in TA , the territorial army , The Terriers
We took the piss , out of Archy , being a weekend soldier
Archy was 19 , same age as us , more or less , a year or so
We'd arranged for us to meet up at The red Lion , Archy was late
We got the right side of more beers
When the pub door opened , in walked Archy!
Oh what a site he looked , in full uniform , had his rifle and all
'' Watcher , Archy! '' , '' Thought you were off to camp at end of September ''
'' Na '' , '' it's been canceled '' , I'm off to war''
'' Army sent me a telegram , just got it '' '' got to go to Folkestone '' , '' got me
train ticket and all ''' Join me unit '' '' and a way I go'' '' off to France , maybe
Belgium ''
No one spoke , not a dicky bird was said
It was hot , it was August , weather was red hot
Town full of holiday makers
Making their way to the sands , to dip there toes in the sea
War seemed , so , so far away , it was August 1914 , and the weather was
lovely
