Sadly , this story/poem , is based upon a soldier's experience.
So I felt his family would like hear
It from me how'd died
We had been chums since we were kids
So his family know me , our family's were close
Celebrated Christmas and each others birthdays ,engagements
Weddings , conception , birth , Christenings
All the family's good and bad times , we had shared them all
I went to Arolds first , they had the telegram by now , he'd been dead
Weeks by the time I got leave
I were all ready had me , words already , to say to Arnolds family
I knocked on their front door , I could here them , inside the house
The door opened , they saw me standing there
It was his oldest sister who opened the door , the younger sister was just
Behind her
The oldest saw me standing out side and said to me:
'' I see you made it back '' , '' why you and not our Arnold? ''
On that she shut the door in my face , and I went home to my family
