LIVE AND LET LIVE (WORLD WAR ONE)
Life at the front had it's strange kind of timesWhen them in front would shoot at us
And we'd not shoot at them
One time , Jerry , sent a message over ter us
A warning
'' Keep your heads down Tomys ''
'' We've been ordered to fire a 40 pounder over to you ''
'' At 6 o'clock this evening ''
Trust me come 6 , we'd , got our selfs , under cover!
It were an unspoken kind of truce , that no shot , are shell be fired
When grub were due
Well common , sense , when you think about it
If one side let loose , then as apples are apples , the other side would respond
And none would eat that day!
One day , an officer , a big nob , came to inspect , us check up on 'os
He look through our trench periscope , and saw a Jerry , out of his trench
He was taken back and ask me '' privet '' , '' theirs , a German , out there! ''
'' Oh yes '' , '' and old boy , gray head , balding? '' , '' yes , that the fellow! ''
'' Oh he's colekting wood for the cooking '' , '' He's usely dos that at this time of day''
'' Then why dont you shoot him , privet? ''
'' well sir beging your pardoon '' '' he dont mean any harm '' '' he aint shooting at me , sir ''
Just then the officer ordered me ter give him me rifle , took it , and shot the old Jerry dead!
When the officer , left , a Jerry sniper , shot and killed one of ours!
That's war , I suppose!
