OFFICER WITH HIS HEAD SCREWED ON RIGHT! (WW1)

The staff officer gits safe way back behind the lines
Wiff their maps with mad cap ideas
Had thees great ideas , plainly mad!
They'd send us orders , expecting them orders to be obeyed
Wiff out questan

Our officers had sent to many to die with any point , no reason
So decided to avid any more deaths

Our officers , know full well were imposable to carry out
Murder and suicide , still against the law back in Blighty
As far as woz known!

To order men to carry out the mad orders
Would be plainly murder
To do as ordered
Clearly an act of suicide

Though hear at The Front , murder and suicide
Quite normal , a common sight
A descant officer would insure no one died
So , he'd keep some German barbwire handy
Cut of a strand , to send back , as prove he'd
Sent men , to check out No Mans Land
Had a close look at Jerreys trench

Them back well back behind the line , none the miser
And no one died that night , this time!

I really enjoyed this war poem. It shows the humanity in those in charge at the front. These lines are powerful:
"To order men to carry out the mad orders
Would be plainly murder
To do as ordered
Clearly an act of suicide"

and so often so true in war.
