WHITE FEATHER (WORLD WAR ONE)

In good old Folkestone town down the Kent coast way
Town councilor Admiral Chiles Penrose Fitzgerald
Speechify , that those not yet in uniform , be shamed
He came up a wiz of an idea , he called upon the woman folk , including girls
Especially teenage , some still at school
When they saw a man , not yet in uniform , a white feather priest in to hand
Then to demand why they were shirking their duty? call them cowherds to their face!

The shaming , the given of white feathers taken up by The Daley Mail
It spread the use of white feathers up , down , across the land
Like the net to day , it spread all over the British Empire!

No a few underage , to young to join up , shamed to volunteer
'Tis , not known how many , recon to be in the thousands
Many of 'em died , just how many no one will ever know
Shamed in to going of to war

Fizgerald , was proud of himself , all the same

I wonder how the fair sex felt , when those they gave white feathers to
Died , or maiden , minds scrambled by what they had seen

I can only hope , they lived in shame , for what they did

It was a despicable thing for the old Admiral to do. Those who spread the feathers from him probably spent the rest of their lives not only in shame, but in deep disturbance of what they had been talked into doing. I am sure none was able to forget and live a truly happy life in their hearts. A sad story.
