This was written some years ago for a fellow poet called "Tears in Rain" who is as constant a friend as Polaris and nearly as far away.

Polaris

At 42 degrees
In the North Sky
You shine
With calm, unwavering light

A constant guide
Through lifetimes
Of longest nights

Though fireworks explode around me

Dazzling me with their brilliance,

When the smoke clears,
You'll be there

And my tears

Will be cleansed

By the rain.

Such good fortune to have a friend so true. I love the beginning and how you brought it around to the strength of Polaris and turned it into friendship so strong.

one trick pony The PoetBay support member heart!
'tis good to have so steady a friend, and good to have an apt reference such as polaris to comfort. i think of the tides and the moon with the same kind of comforting reliability. you've honored your friendship.

This is so pretty and precise! I love the phrase: "Through lifetimes / Of longest nights."

This is so touching! I like smooth juxtaposition--is that an oxymoron?--of objective scientific measurement (42 degrees) and the profoundly subjective sentiment of friendship.
