A Day Forever

Once we were
Forever
Forever and
A day
Then I got too clever
You went
Away
We used to say
Never
Come what, what may
I thought that meant
That we would stay
That way, okay
Forever and
Forever
Once we were
A day

This play with the phrase "forever and a day" is so clever. Call me disillusioned but I find it a much more accurate description of young love than the nostalgic, romanticized variety. The pace of this poem is so light and lovely. "Forever and forever" made me think of "tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow" in Macbeth, which intensified the contrast of lightness and heaviness.
