Come Here, Sit Beside Me

Come here, sit beside me,
Dear companion of my life,
So I can trace each contour
Of your so-familiar face.
A few extra lines
Are to be traced, it's true,
And so, too, for me.

I once imagined
We had found love,
So many years ago,
When passion was new
And eyes so starry bright.

Now I understand
Love was not truly found
Until the years had shaped us,
Moulded us as one:
One heart, one flesh.

So come here, sit beside me,
Dear companion of my life,
And let me rest my head
Upon your shoulder
As I did so many times before,
In serene, shared silence.
